5th Annual Theoretical Astrophysics in Southern California (TASC) Meeting (2005)

The 2005 Theoretical Astrophysics in Southern California (TASC) Meeting will be held on Friday, October 28th, 2005 at the California Institute of Technology and will be hosted by the TAPIR group at Caltech.

In previous years, the TASC meeting was hosted by Caltech (2001 TASC 01), KITP at Santa Barbara (2002 TASC 02), UCLA Physics and Astronomy (2003 TASC 03), and the University of California at Irvine (2004 TASC 04). This one-day meeting is intended to bring together the Southern California theoretical astrophysics community (faculty, researchers, postdocs, and especially students) so as to help each other become familiar with the broad range of research activities in the area.

The spirit of the meeting is to allow people to get to know one another in a relatively informal setting. Postdocs and graduate students are especially encouraged to attend. The meeting will be open, and there will be no registration fee (although there will be a small fee for parking at Caltech). There will be no plenary talks. Instead, all participants are invited to contribute short talks on their current research. We will give equal time (about 10 minutes depending on time constraints) to all speakers. Graduate students will be guaranteed a talk slot; senior astrophysicists will be offered talk slots if time allows. Following tradition, a competent group of judges will present a prize for the best student talk at the meeting.

Registration

The registration deadline for talks is (Thursday) October 20, 2005.
To facilitate our preparations, we ask participants to register as soon as possible! Even if you don't know your talk title yet, please register, and tell us that you will want to give a talk. Registration can be done at our website:

If you think you registered but are not on the list, or if your information is incorrect or incomplete (to add or change a talk title etc.), please email the organizers.

For those of you that have already registered and intend to give a talk, but haven't yet given us a title, please do so by October 20 (either fill out the form again or email us).

Dinner

The conference dinner will be held at Saladang Song, 363 S Fair Oaks Avenue in Pasadena, at 6:00 PM. Please note that there will be no subsidy from the conference! Directions from Caltech can be found here (it's quite easy!).

Lodging, Directions, and Parking

If you are planning to stay overnight in Pasadena, there are a number of options available here. Please note that we are unable to provide any financial support to conference attendees.

Directions to Caltech can be found here. There will be a $5 fee for parking; parking structures are marked on the campus map and on this parking map. Note that visitors should purchase parking permits at the automated pay stations; these are available in several of the parking structures (see the list on this page). Please park in spots labeled "Commuter".

Once on campus, make your way to the Winnett Center. It is marked on the printable map as Winnett (building 51). This building also contains the bookstore, so ask directions to the bookstore if you get lost.
