Postdoctoral Positions - 2009-10
Caltech Theoretical Astrophysics and Relativity Group
Two types of postdoctoral position are available, but the application procedure is the same for both. All applicants are automatically considered for all positions. The two types of positions are:
- Postdoctoral Prize Fellowships in Theoretical Physics and Theoretical Astrophysics (awarded in a division-wide competition). A number of Prize Fellowships at the Postdoctoral Scholar level will be awarded on the basis of an international competition. They are to begin in Fall 2010. These appointments are for a three-year duration, carry an annual stipend and salary and offer a research expense fund.
- Postdoctoral positions supported by the Moore Center for TC[aP], and grants to Chen, Hirata, Kamionkowski, Ott, and Phinney. These are typically renewed for two years, with stipend depending on circumstances and experience.
How to apply
The application deadline for Prize Fellowships is December 1, 2009. Applications will continue to be accepted for regular fellowships until our funding situation becomes fully clear and all positions have been filled, which could be as late as April or May.
After that website closes, applications should be sent via email to the appropriate TAPIR faculty member, c/o JoAnn Boyd, joann@caltech.edu.
APPLICATIONS SHOULD BE SUBMITTED VIA INTERNET: http://www.beatricia.caltech.edu/astro-theoretical/apply.html , where you should select "Astrophysics" and/or "Cosmology" and/or "Relativity and Gravitational Wave Physics" as your research interests.
After that website closes, applications should be sent via email to the appropriate TAPIR faculty member, c/o JoAnn Boyd, joann@caltech.edu.
Application materials should include (i) a cover letter stating that you wish to be considered for a Prize Postdoctoral Fellowship (you do not need to apply separately for the grant-supported postdoctoral positions) and stating your fields of research interest, (ii) curriculum vitae with email address and with citizenship indicated, (iii) bibliography of publications (with refereed articles indicated), (iv) web locations of manuscripts not yet published, and (v) a description of the desired research directions. Please ensure that at least three letters of recommendation are provided by the writers via the web at: http://www.eas.caltech.edu/search/theo-astro/references before the website closes, or to joann@caltech.edu afterwards .
Candidates will automatically be considered for all available postdoctoral positions in their fields of interest. They are also encouraged to apply for Hubble Fellowships, Chandra fellowships, NSF fellowships, NRC fellowships, national fellowships, Fulbright fellowships, NATO fellowships, and so on, listing Caltech as the host institution. Caltech is an Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity Employer. Women, Minorities, Veterans and Disabled Persons are encouraged to apply.
I'm not a theoretical astrophysicist or relativist. What can I do?
If your focus is instrumental, you can apply for the
Prize Fellowships in Experimental Physics and Experimental Astrophysics
APPLICATIONS SHOULD BE SUBMITTED VIA THE WEB AT: http://www.beatricia.caltech.edu/astro-experimental/apply.html
Deadline and requirements otherwise as for the Theoretical Fellowships described above. Subjects covered include development of astronomical detectors for radio (cm, mm) astronomy, infrared and submillimeter astronomy, ultraviolet, X-ray and gamma-ray astronomy, satellite development, and experimental gravitational physics. Candidates whose focus is purely observational will not be considered for Millikan prize fellowships. They should enquire directly of faculty members working in their field of interest. There are often grant-supported postdoctoral fellowships available. Candidates are also encouraged to apply for Hubble Fellowships, Chandra fellowships, NSF fellowships, NATO fellowships, and so on, listing Caltech as the host institution.
